I joined the force eight years ago for a lot of reasons. Besides my family ties to the department I just wanted to be one of the good guys who beats the bad guys. Our system is flawed in so many ways, but I believe in its essence - the preservation of justice. We use negative reinforcement as a means to uphold this justice. Fines, probations, jail and in the extreme cases, prison and executions are handed out as punishment. I'm not a big fan of negative reinforcement, but it's kinda difficult to just tell a drug dealer who's making 50K a month that there are better ways to make a living and expect him to just stop.

Many times, law enforcement agencies aren't the only ones who exact retribution. You piss off some people enough and they need to take matters into their own hands. Unlike the police, these people aren't bound by any set of rules. The need for vengeance, if the wound is deep enough, can become the driving force in someone's life. To them, the consequence has no meaning.

That's the "bad guy" I fear most.

Lara is hunting a demon she released and which is carrying out Lucas Moraltos order to kill the Scarponi family.

Lara is in New York. She is hunting a winged demon, who is trying to kill the Scarponi family. The demon can flee and when the police arrives Lara is taken into custody. She meets Sara Pezzini and they have a little chat about what happened. She believes Lara that she didn't kill anybody as the signs show that it wasn't gunfire that did the damage. Sarah tells Lara that seven members of the Scarponi family were already killed. She urges Lara to tell her everything she knows.

Lara tells her a story about an artifact she had recovered three months ago. It was a talisman with a black pearl. The man who wanted her to recover the artifact is Lucas Moralto, and old friend of Lord Croft. He had told Lara he wanted the artifact to become immortal but his true motives where different. He wanted to have revenge. When she realized that she wanted to take the talisman from him. She split it in two which made things worse. A winged demon was released which follows Mr. Moraltos instructions. Lara has been hunting the demon since.

Sarah tells Lara she's coming with her to Moralto or Lara's not going anywhere and staying in custody. They sneak into the house from the sea side. Lara kills the guards. Sarah is not very happy about it and tells Lara it's not her decision to make but the courts. Lara is going after Moralto while Sarah takes care of the last guard. Moralto is expecting Lara. Lara finds out that Moralto himself is the demon. He attacks her. Sarah comes in and helps her. Lara can finally kill the demon with a knife. Moralto is still alive. Lara decides not to kill him. They have to let him go as no one would believe the story and put a 90 year old in jail. Lara takes the talisman with her to watch over it. And Moralto pays another part of the Scarponi family a visit telling them he's a friend of the family.

A very interesting story. The demon is killed but what will happen to Moralto or the rest of the Scarponi family is uncertain. But Lara met Sarah Pezzini and they've become friends as we can see in the next comics.
